The DEXA scan (Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry) is the gold standard for evaluating bone density and body fat percentage. It is the most precise and reproducible method available .
Concerned about Osteoporosis?
Then you need to accurately scan the bones of your body to detect bone loss early. To prevent potential fractures.
A whole body scanner is used in conjunction with two different low-dose X-Rays to read bone mass and soft tissue mass.
The test is easy and painless. The patient lies down on the table and the machine's arm passes over the body. It is completely open, so there is no chance of claustrophobia or discomfort.
For those trying to lose weight, or starting a training or exercise program, the total body assessment feature will accurately reveal one's body fat percentage, and where the fat is located.
1 out of 2 women and 1 out of 4 men will suffer an osteoporotic fracture in their lifetime. 25% of those who suffer a hip fracture die from complications.
WHY TEST YOUR BODY FAT?
To track weight loss, most of us rely on the scale to tell us whether we've lost or gained weight. But, weight alone is not a clear indication of good health because it does not distinguish between pounds that come from body fat and those that come from lean body mass and muscle.
The scale is often misleading and leads to frustration due to water retention or increased muscle mass. A scale measures everything including muscle, fat, bones, and what you ate or drank that day. It doesn't tell you what you really need to know, how much fat do you have?
Carrying too much fat puts you at risk for many serious medical conditions including heart disease, diabetes, and even certain types of cancer. If you keep your body fat within a reasonable level, you'll be healthier and of course, slimmer. For women, an acceptable percentage is between 21-36 % depending on age. For men, it's 8-25%. Any number over that is considered “overfat ” or obese. So, how can you accurately find out how much body fat you have? The GE Dexa scanner is the most accurate and reproducible test and available at our office.
Dr. Kelberman and his staff will meet with you, discuss your test results and work with you to reach your health goals.
